In a controversial move that further threatens relations between Israel and UNESCO, the UN organisation has decided to back a science chair at the Islamic University of Gaza.
Despite protests from the US and Israel, last year UNESCO voted to let the Palestinians become full members of the agency. The cultural body also recently approved a Palestinian bid to place the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem on its list of sites of World Heritage in Danger.
UNESCO says the new chair at the Gaza university is to promote astronomy, astrophysics and space sciences. Israel says the school serves as a hub for Hamas support and claims that many Hamas terrorists were trained there, learning how to manufacture rockets and explosives.
