The city of Amsterdam has decided to name one of its last unnamed bridges after a local man who saved the lives of 350 Jewish children during the Holocaust.

Whilst still a student, Pieter Meerburg was in charge of nation-wide network that smuggled Jewish children to safehouses across the country and had them secretly adopted to protect their identity.

The Israeli authority for Holocaust commemoration, Yad Vashem, already named Meerburg as Righteous Among the Nations in 1974.

The bridge in question is fittingly located only a couple of hundred metres from a the Portuguese synagogue and the Jewish Historical Museum, it is due to be rechristened as Pieter Meerburg Bridge on September 2.
